Core77 Social Impact Award 2017

IDEO.org was the runner-up for the Core77 Social Impact Award 2017 for their work with We Love Reading during the Amplify Refugee Education Challenge. IDEO.org’s design helped WLR to develop a more scalable approach in order to reach more people.

Core77 is an online industrial design publication that serves as a venue for essays and reports on the topic of design, as well as a gathering point for designers and design enthusiasts through its design competitions, design firm database, and discussion forums, among other services. The Core77 Design Awards recognize excellence in all areas of industrial design, including categories as varied as visual communication, service design, built environment, furniture and lighting, design concept, and packaging. The Design for Social Impact Award is given to those projects designed to directly benefit social, humanitarian, community or environmental causes. Examples include community or environmental impact initiatives, products for underrepresented communities, distribution systems, and disaster relief.

IDEO.org worked with WLR to design a brand, a suite of training tools, a service model, and a partnership strategy that will allow the WLR model to be used by any organization working with refugees across the world. They also created an SMS-based monitoring system, which allows WLR to track their impact and share information with reading volunteers, in an effort to connect their individual contribution to the larger movement.
